My Career and Hobby Advice

Get really good at something specific and get paid for it (ex: teaching high school economics). Then spend the rest of your time getting good at everything else (ex: improv, blogging, relationships) and it will probably make you even better at your original thing.

  2. True. I've come to believe one of the most enjoyable things in life is being good at something.

  4. Well I think focusing on one thing is how you get really good at it and, depending on the thing, can make you a lot of money (oncologists make more than general practitioners).

Then also allow your hobbies to be varied and it will probably make you better at your occupation. For example I think blogging and improv have done as much for my teaching than my education classes.

  5. I think it's great advice for an individual or the bread-winning spouse.

If you are a "trailing spouse" like me, advice would be different: get really good at everything in an industry (like higher education) and learn everything you can from your current job, so that when you have to move, you can find any sort of job within the same industry (alumni association, res life, admissions, library - I have had jobs in each department).

And while I believe that getting really good at something for the earning individual (like my husband the PhD), it does make it tougher to find the "right" job because you are looking for something so specific. There's no harm to being a Renaissance Man career-wise.
